Social media is no longer an option when marketing yourself or your books. The available platforms are perfectly designed for making personal connections with readers, which will greatly increase your chances of selling books (assuming, of course, that those books are professionally edited and proofed). Adding social media into your marketing plan is a sure-fire way to increase your readership, and it is one of the most cost-effective.
Social media is an excellent way to share content. If you want your readers to have a sneak peek at your book, see images, or read excerpts, posting your original content on your social media venues is an easy way to bring it directly to your target audience. You can also post links to your website and blog. Most platforms also offer the ability to boost your posts and content so you can reach even more people outside of your immediate fan base.
Your readers want to make a personal connection with you, as do potential readers. They’ll love hearing personal updates about your writing progress, your speaking engagements, and your authority on the subjects you tackle in your books. Building this relationship with your fans will only serve as a positive association between you, your art, and them. It’s also a quick way for fans to comment on and review your work, as they can post on your page or send messages to you directly through your chosen platform. Post and promote your events as well, to boost attendance. Fan retention is one of the main reasons authors should invest some time in appropriate social media.
Social media is also an amazing way to build awareness of your work and you as an author. If you are a self-published or first-time author, you’ll need to expand beyond your friends and family for sales, and these platforms are a great way to do that. Through paid advertising on a platform like Facebook, you can target people who fit your demographics and reach people who otherwise may not have stumbled across your book.
Many authors come to us saying they don’t have the time to invest in social media, or that they don’t believe it works, but it is well worth the time and effort that it takes to manage. It can yield amazing results.
